Susheel Rao

Susheel is an environmentally conscious jeweller, who is seeking to create more ethical and beautiful jewellery. She also works on promoting sustainability within the built environment and business, and brings this expertise and ethic to her jewellery. Currently she uses recycled metals where possible, and is intending to Fairtrade silver and gold when this becomes practical in April 2014. She is also exploring where best to source the gemstones she uses.

Susheel has been making jewellery for the past 6 years, mainly using silver and gemstones. She likes to explore how she can introduce colour into her work, through stones, metals, and looking at other natural alternatives. She enjoys challenging herself in form and complexity, and is exploring more sculptural jewellery.

Susheel is currenlty one of the emerging makers in residence at City Lit.

My inspiration for this exhibition was Van Gogh's Starry Night. All pieces are made with 100% recycled silver. Shown here are a pair a spiral stud earrings, the starry night brooch, which converts to a pendant, and is a half locket. Finally is the starry night ring, with gold leaf and a blue sapphire.

Joy collection

I have created a series of different pieces of jewellery based on the theme of Joy. These here link with the spirals of whirling round and to Starry Night too. All pieces are made from 100% recycled silver. The bracelet in made from indivdually wound 1mm wire links with an engraved charm. The earrings are from 0.8 mm wire with tourmaline beads, of differing colours. The pendant is an experiment with the same shape.
